Ole Gunnar Solskjaer offers injury update on Anthony Martial

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed that he is hopeful French striker Anthony Martial will return to action before the season comes to a close.

Martial picked up a knee injury while on international duty back in March, but was photographed back in light training on Wednesday.

Martial won’t be part of Thursday’s Europa League semi-final trip to Roma, but Solskjaer confirmed to the club’s official website that he expects the 25-year-old back in action before the season comes to a close.

“Anthony’s looking good. He has just about started outside jogging, which is the first step on the rehab of course,” Solskjaer said.

“He’s done most of the work in the gym and to see him out there getting some fresh air is good and hopefully we will see him before the season is out. He’s supporting the team, he wants to be a part of the final and he’s working hard to be available before that.”

Martial will remain at Carrington to work on his fitness, and Solskjaer revealed he will be joined by Welsh winger Daniel James – who has picked up his own injury in the build-up to the game.

“Dan James is not available. He’s still out for a little while,” Solskjaer said.

Fortunately, if there was ever a time for United to be short on options in attack, it’s this one. The Red Devils are 6-2 up from the first leg and can afford to take their foot off the gas somewhat, with Solskjaer expected to play some of his younger players.

Academy forwards Anthony Elanga and Amad Diallo have both been included in the travelling squad, as has 21-year-old goalkeeper Nathan Bishop.

“We spent days to prepare for the Liverpool game, we were ready for it and we’ll have to do that again at some point,” Solskjaer continued. “But, unfortunately, the game didn’t go ahead. The players really wanted to play and we felt ready for it.

”Now all our focus is on this game and we’ve given ourselves a very good foundation with a good result from the first leg. But we go to this one wanting to win this one.“
