Chelsea v Aston Villa Live Commentary & Result, 11/09/2021, Premier League

That’s all for today, goodbye!

Chelsea’s unbeaten start to the season continues and they move up into second, only behind Manchester United on goals scored. Next up for them is the Champions League when they face Zenit. Villa couldn’t add to their own unbeaten run, but they’ll be hoping to get back to winning ways against Everton next time out.

Lukaku’s brace helps Chelsea to a 3-0 win over Aston Villa. His first came 15 minutes in when he slotted past Steer, but Mendy kept his side in it at the other end by making some great saves to deny Watkins, Mings and Konsa. After the break, Mings gifted the ball to Kovacic outside his own box and the midfielder slotted home. The third came in stoppage time when Azpilicueta teed up Lukaku and he got his second of the game to wrap it up.

90′ + 6′ FULL-TIME: CHELSEA 3-0 ASTON VILLA.

90′ + 5′ Chelsea are pushing for a fourth here after Villa give the ball away with another sloppy pass in midfield. Alonso slides it down the left for Lukaku, but Cash gets there first to stop him from getting on the end of it.

90′ + 3′ It’s a good run by Azpilicueta and he knocks the ball through Mings’ legs to get away from him before picking out Lukaku on the edge of the box.

Chelsea

90′ + 3′ LUKAKU SCORES AGAIN! Azpilicueta has so much space down the right and he plays a lovely ball infield to Lukaku. His first touch is a good one and he gets the shot away quickly, firing it past Steer and in at his near post to make it 3-0 Chelsea!

90′ + 2′ Jorginho is still down receiving treatment after McGinn’s challenge, but he’s able to get back to his feet. He’s moving gingerly as he walks off the pitch with the medical team, but he’s going to carry on.

Aston Villa

90′ Targett is also booked for dissent for his reaction to the decision.

Aston Villa

90′ McGinn was quickly into Jorginho and though he got the ball, he was high when he slid in on the Italian and he’s shown a yellow card, much to his frustration.

88′ Cash puts another long throw-in into the box for Villa and it’s glanced on by Mings at the near post. Watkins can’t get high enough in the middle to head it on goal and Azpilicueta hooks it clear on the far side.

86′ Bailey caught Alonso on the back of his head during an aerial challenge and the referee has waved the medical team onto the pitch. He’s quickly back to his feet though and he’ll be able to carry on.

84′ BLOCK! Bailey’s corner has Mendy scrambling and he pushes it off his line, but only gets it as far as Watkins. He sends his header back across goal and Jorginho throws himself in front of it to make an important block.

Chelsea

82′ Hudson-Odoi slowly makes his way to the sideline when his number is held up and Werner is on in his place.

Aston Villa

80′ Final roll of the dice for Villa now as Luiz is taken off and replaced by Nakamba.

78′ McGinn swings another corner into the box for Villa and it looks like Mendy has it dealt with. There’s a coming together between Traore and Rudiger behind him which causes him to fumble it though, and Chelsea get the free-kick.

76′ CHANCE! Hudson-Odoi is causing some real problems for Villa and he sees another shot blocked by Konsa on the edge of the box. The rebound falls nicely for Alonso, who hits a low shot across goal, but he sends it just wide.

75′ Chelsea are patiently knocking the ball around in their own half and each pass is being met by a cheer from the crowd. They’re in no hurry to push forward right now and are trying to draw Villa out of their shape.

73′ CLOSE! Watkins holds off Rudiger before pulling the ball back to Traore just outside the box. He steps inside to open up the space before firing his shot on goal, but a slight nick off Silva helps it up and over the crossbar.

71′ Villa just can’t get on the ball at the moment as Chelsea keep them penned back in their own half. Alonso pushes forward down the left before swinging an early cross in, but it’s cleared by Konsa.

Aston Villa

69′ Ings hasn’t really been able to get into the game in the second half, so he’s being taken off and replaced by Traore, who has recovered from a hamstring injury.

68′ Hudson-Odoi is unmarked on the edge of the box and Kovacic spots him as he cuts inside from the right. He tries to fizz a low cross into him, but Mings recovers well to get back and intercept it.

66′ Villa just can’t get out of their own half at the moment and Chelsea’s high press is starting to catch them out. Mings keeps the ball in play but then gifts it to Jorginho with his clearance.

Chelsea

64′ Second change for Chelsea now, with Havertz making way for Azpilicueta. He’ll sit in the right wing-back position, meaning Hudson-Odoi will be moved into a more attacking position.

63′ It’s well worked by Chelsea as they work it from left to right and Ziyech picks out a good pass into Hudson-Odoi. He plays a dangerous cross into the six-yard box, but Tuanzebe gets there ahead of Lukaku to intercept it.

Marcos Alonso

Yellow Card

Chelsea

61′ Alonso has a few attempts at trying to tug Bailey back before eventually bringing the substitute down and he’s shown a yellow card.

59′ CHANCE! Bailey does really well to hold off Rudiger as he cuts inside from the right and he manages to pull the ball back to Watkins from the byline. He thinks about the cross before eventually going for goal, but a deflection off Silva helps it wide.

58′ Kovacic has both scored and assisted a goal in the same game for the first time in the Premier League, and third in his top-five European league career, all doing so for Inter v Sassuolo (2014) and Real Madrid v Real Sociedad (2017).

Aston Villa

56′ Villa are making their first change of the game now as Ramsey makes way for Bailey.

55′ Ziyech has his ankles clipped by Targett and Chelsea have a free-kick in a good position down the right. He steps up to take it himself, but the cross is too close to Steer and he is able to hold onto it.

53′ McGinn isn’t giving up down the right side and he wins possession back off Chelsea three times. He takes it to the byline to try and swing in a cross when he’s nudged off the ball by Rudiger, but the free-kick he’s asking for isn’t given.

51′ Silva spots Havertz hovering in between two of Villa’s defenders and he goes long to try and pick him out. He stays onside and brings it down with a good first touch before dragging his effort well wide of the far post.

Chelsea

49′ KOVACIC SCORES! Tuanzebe holds off Lukaku before playing it to Mings, but he seels Steer short with the backpass. Kovacic is following it in and gets there ahead of the keeper before slotting his shot into the far bottom corner. 2-0 Chelsea!

48′ Villa have picked up where they left off at the end of the first half and a corner is swung into the box. Cash heads it back into the middle where Ings is waiting, but he can’t pick out Watkins to his right.

46′ Chelsea get us back underway for the second half!

Chelsea

46′ Chelsea are making a change at the break and it’s Saul that’s making way for Jorginho.

Tuchel looked a frustrated figure on the touchline despite his side having the lead as they struggled to cope with Villa’s pressure after the goal and will be expecting a big improvement after the break. As for the visitors, they’ll feel they deserve to be level and they look likely to score if they can keep up the pressure.

Lukaku’s goal gives Chelsea a 1-0 half-time lead over Aston Villa. It took just 15 minutes for him to break the deadlock and net his first goal at Stamford Bridge when he coolly slotted his shot under Steer. Konsa cleared one off the line and onto the bar before Watkins was denied at the other end. Mendy then made a brilliant double save to deny Mings and Konsa to keep his clean sheet intact.

45′ + 2′ HALF-TIME: CHELSEA 1-0 ASTON VILLA.

45′ Villa’s free-kick is only half-cleared by Chelsea again and it bounces to Ramsey, who is waiting just outside the box. He goes for goal, but scuffs at the shot and it takes two deflections before Alonso hooks it clear.

43′ Villa are still keeping the pressure on here but a loose touch from Ings allows Chelsea to win it back. Havertz is driving through the middle with the ball but he can’t even make it out of his own half before Luiz nicks it back.

41′ It’s a great tackle from Konsa to nick the ball off Kovacic and McGinn comes away with it. He picks out Ramsey’s run down the left and he cuts inside before hitting a low shot, but Mendy gets behind it to deny him.

39′ Chelsea are patiently trying to pass their way upfield and Kovacic picks out Hudson-Odoi’s run down the right. He drills in a low cross, but Konsa slides in to clear it at the near post.

37′ It’s a sloppy pass back from Saul that plays Chelsea into trouble as Luiz intercepts it. He’s driving towards goal and Silva has no choice but to pull him down to try and stop the counter-attack, but the free-kick comes to nothing.

35′ Chelsea are trying to regain their control in this game and are just keeping possession on the halfway line. Chalobah spots Ziyech pulling away on the left and tries to switch play out to him, but it’s cut out by Cash.

33′ DOUBLE SAVE! The long throw-in isn’t cleared by Chelsea and it falls for Mings, who fires a good shot on goal. Mendy gets two hands on it and pushes it away, but only as far as Konsa. He quickly gets another shot away, but Mendy is back on his line to deny him too.

32′ Mings goes for the more direct route to goal again with a long ball over the top to Watkins. He nods it down to Luiz this time, and he slides it into Ings’ feet on the edge of the box. He hits a low shot on goal, but it’s blocked by Chalobah.

30′ McGinn has two defenders tight to him but he does really well to turn between them and come away with the ball. He pulls a cross back from the byline, but it’s too close to Mendy, who holds onto it.

Aston Villa

28′ Mings gets the ball off Hudson-Odoi, but catches the player in the process and picks up a booking.

27′ Ramsey plays a one-two with Targett to get away from Hudson-Odoi down the left before whipping a cross into the box. Ings cushions it down for Watkins, but he doesn’t have space for a shot. He pulls it back for Luiz, whose first-time shot flies high over the bar.

25′ Lukaku has scored his first club goal at Stamford Bridge in what is his 15th appearance at the ground and from his 22nd attempted shot.

23′ BLOCK! Chelsea look a bit nervy at the back as McGinn dispossesses Kovacic, who couldn’t pick out a pass. He slots it through to Watkins, who coolly takes the ball around the outrushing Mendy, before hitting the shot but this one’s blocked by Silva.

21′ Villa are still pushing for an equaliser here, with Watkins and Ings giving the Chelsea defenders no time on the ball in their own half. Watkins intercepts another pass, only for his cross to be blocked by Hudson-Odoi.

19′ The corner is heading straight in and, though Mendy sees it late, he manages to punch it away ahead of Ramsey. He only gets it as far as Watkins, who sets himself before hitting a shot, but that’s blocked by Alonso.

17′ GOOD SAVE! McGinn intercepts Saul’s pass and threads it through for Ramsey, who has acres of space to run into. He picks out Watkins ahead of him and he drills a low shot on goal, but Mendy gets down and manages to bundle it wide.

Chelsea

15′ Chelsea got out of trouble in their own half with a series of one-touch passing before Kovacic got his head up and spotted Lukaku’s run through the middle.

Chelsea

15′ LUKAKU SCORES! It’s a great throughball from Kovacic to play Lukaku in on goal, and the forward dummies a shot to get away from Tuanzebe. He cuts back inside before slotting his shot under Steer and into the back of the net for his first goal at Stamford Bridge. 1-0 Chelsea!

13′ Cash goes long over the top to try and pick out Watkins, but he can’t bring the ball down with two Chelsea defenders tight to him. Targett tries to keep it alive for Villa, but he ends up fouling Hudson-Odoi.

11′ Alonso has a problem here for Chelsea after Cash caught him late in his attempts to dispossess him. He’s receiving treatment on it now and he’s limping off to the sidelines with help, but it looks like he’s going to try and carry on.

9′ OFF THE LINE! Hudson-Odoi swings the corner in for Chelsea and there’s a scramble in the crowded six-yard box to get on the end of it. Nobody manages to get a touch on it though, but Konsa gets his knee to it on the line, sends it onto the bar and it bounces away.

Aston Villa

8′ Ramsey drags Ziyech back by his arm to stop him from getting onto the ball and picks up an early yellow card.

6′ Villa are keeping the ball well in midfield and when it’s played through to Ramsey, he makes a brilliant driving run into the box. He brushes two Chelsea defenders aside before swinging in a cross, but it’s blocked by Rudiger.

4′ CHANCE! Villa win a free-kick on the left and McGinn swings a good cross into the far post from the set-piece. Konsa rises highest to get on the end of it, but can’t head his effort on target, sending it wide.

2′ Chelsea have made a bright start with Rudiger carrying the ball a long way from the halfway line. He plays a one-two with Havertz when he reaches the edge of the box, but his shot is blocked by Luiz and put out for a corner.

1′ Ings gets the game underway for Villa!
