In an alternate universe, Pat Shurmur’s Giants looked very different

When the New York Giants hired Pat Shurmur to be their head coach in January of 2018, he had a clear plan of who he wanted to run his offense.

The former offensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings wanted to hire Vikings quarterbacks coach Kevin Stefanski to be his OC here in East Rutherford.

The Vikings declined to honor the Giants’ request to interview Stefanski yet did not give him Shurmur’s old job with the team.

Instead, the Giants hired Mike Shula to run their offense but Shurmur kept the play calling duties. That probably would not have happened had Stefanski been hired as OC.

Stefanski eventually ascended to the Vikings’ OC job after John DeFilippo was fired during the season. Or course, Stefanski would go on to become the head coach of the Cleveland Browns and was named NFL Coach of the Year in 2020.

For the defense, Shurmur was eyeing Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, who had just lost out on the head coaching job with the Bears to Matt Nagy.

Chicago did not want Fangio to leave, giving him a three-year extension and full control of the defense which kept him in the Windy City.

Fangio was named the head coach of the Denver Broncos in 2019 and, showing that turnabout is fair play, hired Shurmur to be his OC in 2020 replacing Rich Scangarello.

In an alternate universe where Shurmur was able to hire both Stefanski and Fangio, what would have become of the Giants? It’s a shame we’ll never know.
