Giants select Kwity Paye in latest Charley Casserly mock draft

In the first mock draft published by NFL Network analyst Charley Casserly, the New York Giants selected Alabama wide receiver Jaylen Waddle at No. 11 overall.

However, Casserly has had a change of heart and in his second mock draft of the year has the Giants passing on Waddle in favor of Michigan edge rusher Kwity Paye. Waddle then goes No. 12 overall to the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Giants, who desperately need an outside pass rusher, take advantage of Paye being available here.

Although Paye fits a need for the Giants, will he play enough snaps to warrant the 11th overall selection? If the Giants view him as a top-end edge rusher but not a three-down lineman, the value simply isn’t there.

General manager Dave Gettleman could trade down for the first time in his career and then attempt to draft Paye, but nothing is guaranteed at that point. However, there are several other edge rushers who appear to be falling late into the first round and even slipping into Round 2.

Several recent mock drafts have the Giants landing Miami edge rusher Gregory Rousseau in Round 2, which would be optimal. It would allow them to add a wide receiver or offensive lineman at No. 11 and then solve their edge problem at No. 42, but again, there’s no guarantee the draft will play out that way.

With Paye, it’s tricky because many draft analysts believe he’ll struggle against the run in the NFL. If that turns out to be true, he becomes a massive one-dimensional investment at No. 11 and the Giants simply can’t play that hand with so many jobs on the line.
